Doripenem (Doribax – Ortho-McNeil) Antibiotic

2007 New Drug Comparison Rating (NDCR) =
Indications: Administered via intravenous infusion for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal
infections, and complicated urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis caused by susceptible
organisms
Comparable drugs: Imipenem/cilastatin (Primaxin), Meropenem (Merrem IV), ertapenem (Invanz)
Advantages:
–Does not require inclusion of cilastatin for optimum activity (compared with imipenem)
–More active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter (compared with ertapenem)
Disadvantages:
–Fewer labeled indications
–Shorter duration of action (compared with ertapenem that may be administered once a day in most
patients)
–Not indicated for use in pediatric patients
–Fewer options for parenteral administration (compared with imipenem and ertapenem that may be
administered intramuscularly as well as intravenously)
