Many Brits will be busy planning summer barbecues and dusting off their patio furniture this bank holiday weekend.

However, it's likely an unfortunate few will be feeling less enthusiastic at the thought of spending time outdoors.

According to the NHS, around 20% of the population suffers from hay fever. As I know from personal experience, it's a condition that can cause real misery.

What is hay fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollens that occur naturally in the atmosphere. It generally affects people during the spring and summer months because this is the time of year when most plants and trees are in bloom.

While the majority of people don't have a physical response to these substances, hay fever sufferers find that they ‘overreact' to the presence of pollen in the air.

A chemical called histamine is released by the body, and it's this that causes symptoms such as a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes and sneezing.

How is hay fever treated?
If you think you have hay fever and are in need of treatment, it's a good idea to visit your GP.

This is particularly important if you are pregnant or breast feeding, or if you suffer from eczema, asthma or any other type of condition. Over the counter remedies may not be suitable for you, so it's unwise to take them without seeking advice from a doctor.

Most people treat their hay fever symptoms with antihistamine tablets. As the name suggests, these fight the effects of the histamine your body releases when you experience an attack of hay fever.
